Using an Additional Language as the Medium of Instruction: Transition in Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education

We'd like to thank Agatha van Ginkel for her excellent presentation to the network on "Using an Additional Language as the Medium of Instruction: Transition in Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education." The webinar, hosted by the MTB-MLE Network on January 27, 2014, was attended by nearly 50 network members and colleagues and was highly interactive and participatory.

In the presentation, Dr. van Ginkel shared common assumptions about language learning in young children as well as research-based evidence on key conditions necessary for the literacy success. Citing the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the presentation also covered the threshold levels for vocabulary and basic competencies that learners must meet before being ready to transition to learning in an L2. Dr. van Ginkel concluded the presentation with a discussion of how to design the effective mother tongue-based and multilingual education programs.

The attached materials include Dr. van Ginkel's presentation slides as well as a reference list of the research cited.

If you were unable to attend the presentation or would like to share it with colleagues, please find the full video recording of the webinar here
